Sunday 4th May League
Diamonds 1 Allanton 3
With only twelve players available this was going to be a hard shift for the Diamonds, and so it was to prove.
Both sides pushed for the crucial first goal. Allanton were playing some good football but were unable to craft any clear cut chances. The Diamonds had a long shot from Gary comfortably saved by the keeper, he was then forced into a more difficult save clutching a header from Adam.
Allanton then started to take a grip of the game with the Diamonds having to re-shuffle their defence when Ian was taken off, unable to recover from a rib knock. They took the lead in the 25th minute, working the ball down the right; the ball was cut inside and struck home.
The half ended with Allanton in front but the Diamonds still hopeful.
Allanton shot over the bar in the early minutes, and then the Diamonds struck. Craig launched a free kick deep into the Allanton penalty box, Callum drifted in at the far post and met the ball on the volley, rifling it high into the net.
Allanton responded with a spell of pressure, Craig off his line to save at the feet of a forward, then making a save low at the front post.
The Diamonds were also pressing but were being hindered by an increasing string of injuries. In a game without any real foul play : Tam took a foot knock, Callum a knee knock, Stuart also struggling.
Kenny worked the ball down the right, on the bye line his low cross was turned away for a corner. Minutes later Kenny powered towards the Allanton goal and was halted by powerful challenge, as Kenny fell he twisted his back, adding the injury list.
Allanton pushed forward looking to regain their lead and managed that, scoring two goals in two minutes. 60 mins, a shot was driven home from the edge of the penalty box. 62 mins, a cut back was turned into the net.
With Gary now hobbling with an ankle injury and Blair playing with a "dead leg" it was no surprise that Allanton dominated the final period of the game. The Diamonds eventually ending the game with ten men, Kenny being withdrawn to prevent any further damage to his back.
No faulting the Diamonds today for effort and endeavour. With a full squad and injury free it could have been a different outcome.
Allanton also had their injury problems. Their # 12 was taken off with what looked like a nasty ankle knock. Hopefully the injury wasn’t as serious as it looked and he makes a speedy recovery.
Thursday 1st May League
Blackburn United 7 Uphall Diamonds 1
Having run Blackburn very close at the start of the season the Diamonds were hopeful of ending the season on a high in a game that they really had to take something from. One point would be good, two would be ideal, unfortunately the Diamonds were unable to rise to the occasion.
In the early stages possession was shared between the teams, Blackburn however were using their possession to better effect.
A shot clipped the post going wide, Gary clearing another shot off of the line. With 20 minutes gone the home side took the lead with a well taken goal.
With Blackburn still pressing Craig made a good save at the feet of a forward. Scott making a good headed clearance at the back post under pressure from a couple of Blackburn forwards. In the 20th minute the Diamonds went two goals down when a corner was headed home.
The Diamond were still fighting and created a chance. Stuart lofted a ball forwards, Andrew headed it into the path of Kenny who hit a good shot which was charged down by an alert defender. Blackburn then broke up the park and scored their third goal.
The Diamonds came close to a lifeline in the final minute of the half. Some good play from Laurence put Paul clear on goal, his low shot was saved however by the keeper and the half time whistle sounded.
The Diamonds were given some hope in the second minute of the new half. Sam launched a throw in to the far post, Gary met the ball with a powerful header and suddenly the visitors were back in the game.
This should have been the point when the Diamonds rolled their sleeves up and “got stuck in”, it just didn’t happen however and Blackburn scored a four unanswered goals to run out easy winners.
Very disappointing !
Sunday 20th April League
Fauldhouse 10 Diamonds 2
With a depleted squad, missing five players for various reasons, the Diamonds knew this was going to be a very difficult game.
The home side were quickly on the attack and came close when a diving header flew just past the post, breathing a sigh of relief the Diamonds settled and started to play some football. Sam with a long range shot forcing the Fauldhouse keeper into a save under his crossbar.
In 9 minutes Fauldhouse scored, a through ball should have been cleared but some hesitation at the back allowed the Fauldhouse forward to nip in and tuck the ball home. A real set back but the Diamonds did not wilt and pushed forward, looking for the equalizer, matching Fauldhouse they won a free kick. Craig lofted a ball into the penalty box, Blair had a snap shot parried by the keeper, Adam latched onto the rebound and cut the ball back across goal where it was swept into the net by Callum. 15 minutes and the Diamonds were level.
What was needed was a period on consolidation; unfortunately Fauldhouse upped a gear and hit the Diamonds with three goals in the space of eight minutes.
The third of these goals was on the face of it a tap in, but showed the level of determination and anticipation that the Diamonds must strive for. A long ball looked to be going out of play, and would have were it not for the overhead kick from the Fauldhouse player. He caught the ball on the goal line, his kick clipping the post and bouncing across the face of goal, tapped in by the forward looking for any possible chance.
A difficult task was then made near impossible with a double injury blow. Iain jarred his knee and had to hobble off the park, his replacement Dougie lasted only a minute or so before tearing a muscle in his hip and having to be carried off, clearly in a lot of pain.
Pushing to retain their league championship Fauldhouse killed the game off early in the second half with two quick goals.
The Diamonds could have thrown in the towel at this stage but they didn’t and nicked a goal back. Craig swept an excellent long ball into the penalty box, the keeper came but couldn’t claim it, Callum following up slotted a low shot into the net.
Fauldhouse hit back, scoring two quick goals. Their quick breaks down the wing were very dangerous, Scott making an amazing goal line clearance from another attack. The Diamonds were still trying to make a fight of it. Scott won a crunching tackle and launched the ball into the penalty box. The keeper leaping to pluck the ball off of Sam’s head.
The home side scored twice again late in the game, sandwiched in between those goals was a fine drive from Adam that the Fauldhouse keeper saved well.
Back in November the Diamonds played Fauldhouse in the County Cup and lost heavily putting up little resistance. Today, although losing, the Diamonds made Fauldhouse work for their victory.
Thursday 17th April League
Murieston 4 Diamonds 3
The Diamonds travelled up to Bankton on a very cold and windy Thursday evening and along with Murieston they served up an exciting game of football that swung one way, then another. With both teams going for it the result was in doubt right up to the final whistle.
The Diamonds made the better start and created early chances. In the first minute a through ball by Adam released Blair, the Muri keeper sensing the danger was quickly off his line to gather the ball. Callum then shot wide, keeping up the pressure Adam swung in a good cross ball, Callum was lining up his header but saw the ball nicked off his head by a Muri defender.
Murieston then started to press, a good hanging cross was headed downwards, Craig smothering the ball on the goal line under pressure pushed it round the post, the resultant corner swung goalwards and bounced onto the crossbar before going over.
In 12 minutes Muri took the lead. They worked the ball through the centre, a good pass released their forward, whose shot caught Craig unawares, slipping into the net at the far post. Minutes later the Diamonds had a huge escape. Good play down the right released a Muri forward, he did everything right, running in and driving the ball goalwards, it looked a goal, but hit the inside of the far post, bouncing up and into the grateful arms of the Diamonds keeper.
Playing well the visitors pushed for the equalizer, pinning Muri back.
Sam hit a fierce shot, hitting a defenders leg and deflecting past the post. Kenny then drove into the Muri penalty box, he looked to be bundled over but play continued, the ball falling to Callum who saw his low shot saved by the keeper.
The Diamonds deservedly drew level. Adam swung in a fine 27th minute corner, Sam met the ball with a powerful header, the keeper doing well to push the ball out, Sam was first to respond slamming the rebound high into the net. Still pressing a second Diamonds goal was prevented by a fine save from the Muri keeper. Craig T swept a terrific crossfield ball to Callum who advanced on goal hitting a powerful low drive, the Muri keeper saving, holding the shot under pressure from the following up forwards.
As the half time whistle drew close Muri regained the lead. In the final minute they moved up the park, a good low cross into the penalty box was met by the Muri forward who hit a shot on the turn into the corner of the net.
The goal boosted Murieston and as the second half started they had the Diamonds encamped in their own half, the ball being repelled by the defence but returned immediately.
A good pass released a Muri forward, in a repeat of a first half chance, the forward’s shot cannoned off of the post, bouncing into the six yard box. Gary spotted the danger and beat the following up forward to the ball, sweeping the rebound away.
A Murieston shot flew over the bar, then Craig made a fine save, off his line to dive at the forward’s feet. Another shot was driven over and Craig once again made a good save, closing the forward down, blocking his shot. The keeper then was swiftly out of his penalty box to sweep up a Muri break.
Gradually the Diamonds clawed their way back into the game and in the 48th minute they levelled scoreline again. Sam sent a throw in goalwards, it was scrambled clear but only to Callum. He took the ball wide, to the goal line cutting back into the path of the in running Diamonds forwards, it was Sam who managed to bundle the ball over the line.
It was Murieston’s turn to be pinned in their own half.
Kenny latched onto a good pass, he flicked the ball over a defender and then swept it over the advancing keeper. The ball crashed off the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled clear.
53 minutes gone and the visitors took the lead. A corner was swung under the crossbar, it was cleared to the edge of the box, unfortunately for Murieston it fell to Sam who wasn’t going to miss a chance like that. He drove the ball low through a ruck of players into the net to complete a fine hat trick.
Still attacking. Dougie passed to Blair who in turn fed Callum, He hit a shot which was well dealt with by the keeper. Kenny then had a shot saved.
Again the game swung, Craig making a great save, with a Muri forward through he finger tipped the shot over the bar. A series of corners followed, all well defended until a free header was allowed, fortunately for the Diamonds the header going wide. The score then became 3-3, a good move released a Muri forward who made no mistake with his low shot.
Stung, the Diamonds mounted some powerful attacks. A corner was won and cleared, the ball fell to Craig T who slammed a volley goalwards. The Murieston keeper who was having a fine game, dived to his right and made a great save.
Another attack followed, Kenny ran through, slipped a pass to Callum who drove just wide. Still more pressure saw the ball scrambled to the edge of the six yard box, Kenny hit a shot on the turn, the keeper again saving. Callum having another shot drift just over.
Murieston hit back. A good move saw a low cross whipped into the Diamonds goalmouth. Craig making a point blank save, the ball cannoning away for a corner. The corner was curled in and touched onto the bar and away by the Diamonds keeper.
As the clock ticked on it was clear that this game had at least one more goal in it, the only question was : which way would it go ?
The answer came with 3 minutes remaining. A long pass wasn’t cut off, it fell to a Murieston striker who buried the chance in the Diamonds net. A heartbreaking moment for the Diamonds but they didn’t feel sorry for themselves. Launching a late attack a free kick was won. Craig T hit a thunderous drive, the keeper dived full length to turn the ball wide for a corner. The corner was swung in, scrambled in front of goal, Tam stuck out a foot sending the ball goalwards where it was saved once again by the keeper.
Time had run out and the final whistle sounded to end a great game of football.
No points for the Diamonds but a performance which indicates that points will be won sooner rather than later.
Sunday 13th April League
Diamonds 2 Armadale 3
The season’s most important game so far for Uphall Diamonds and Armadale, being played on a very wet and rutted King George Park. The Diamonds suffering an early set back when Ian was injured in the warm up, necessitating a team re-shuffle.
The Diamonds dominated the early minutes of the game. Coming close when a shot from Kenny flashed over, Callum then made a good run down the left, he was very unlucky to see the ball bobble just as he was striking his shot, the ball flying wide.
Armadale then settled and had a good chance of their own. A quick free kick was taken sending their forward through on goal, he was stopped by Craig, off his line to smother the ball.
The Diamonds continued to press and were scratching their heads wondering how the opening goal hadn’t been scored. A shot was pushed onto the bar by the Armadale keeper, the rebound driven goalwards and cleared off of the line, a goal line scramble ensued before the ball was whipped away to safety.
The visitors then hit a fine spell of form. A good move put an Armadale forward clear, his shot beat Craig but somehow curled round the far post.
Minutes later the ball was in the Diamonds’ net, a long ball was sent into the penalty box, Craig came out and collided with the forward, the big Diamonds keeper going down in the collision. The ball fell to a following up Armadale player who lofted an excellent shot high into the net. The goal however was chalked off for a foul on the keeper.
With 21 minutes gone Armadale scored the opening goal. Using “route one” a long ball from their keeper bounced into the Diamonds half through to an Armadale forward, he controlled the ball well, advanced on goal and slotted it into the net.
Armadale finished the half on a high and doubled their lead with four minutes remaining. One of their players twisted and turned in the box and was brought down for a clear penalty. The spot kick was driven home giving the Diamonds a mountain to climb in the second half.
The Diamonds started the second half in fine form.
Liam scrapped and battled in midfield, winning the ball he played Gordon free on goal, the keeper coming out to push the ball wide for a corner. Callum then drove goalwards, lashing a shot wide. Liam again won the ball, his pass this time found Kenny who struck a shot just wide of the far post.
In the half’s 10th minute the Diamonds got back into the game, Sam’s long throw bounced into the Armadale six yard box. Kenny, in a knot of players scrambled the ball into the net.
From the kick off the Diamonds regained the ball. Craig lofted the ball forward, Gordon headed it on, Kenny took a touch and lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper. The ball bounced and dropped, for the Diamonds, round the wrong side of the post.
12 minutes into the half Armadale restored their two goal lead. With some good passing they advanced up the park catching the Diamonds on the break. The final pass was knocked into the net by an Armadale forward who looked to be a good two or three yards offside. To be fair to the Referee however it wasn’t easy an easy call from his vantage point in the centre circle !
A set back for the Diamonds but they weren’t going to go down without a fight and pushed Armadale back again. Sam pushed forward and into the visitor’s penalty box, he was pushed wide but managed to pull the ball back across the face of goal. Kenny was waiting to pull the trigger but was thwarted by a fine blocking tackle.
As the half progressed the pattern was set, Diamonds pressing, Armadale dangerous on the break. Craig making a good save on one of those breaks to prevent a fourth goal.
The Diamonds set up another good attack, Kenny picked up pass and raced down the wing, he shrugged off a defenders challenge and whipped a fine low cross into the six yard box. Callum advanced on the ball but the move was halted by the Referee’s whistle, awarding a free kick on the wing …. To the attacking Diamonds team !!
With ten minutes remaining the Diamonds scored the goal that their pressure deserved. Sam won the ball, turned and fed it to Callum who cut into the Armadale penalty box. He drove a low shot across the goal and in a scramble, Kenny in the right spot forced the ball over the line.
A cliff hanging finale was set up.
Gordon at the edge of the box turned and looped in a shot which was saved under the bar. He then fired a pass across goal, Sam’s shot being blocked.
With the seconds ticking away the Diamonds were cursing their luck again. A free kick was lofted into the Armadale box, the ball was headed over the keeper and onto the cross bar. The keeper going down in the process, the Referee allowed play to continue and from the edge of the penalty box Laurence powered a drive goalwards, only to see it headed off of the line. Desperately unfortunate for the Diamonds but credit to the Armadale defender who had the presence of mind to cover the goal line.
With that escape Armadale moved the ball up the park and held onto the ball, keeping it well away from the danger area to see out the game, and win a valuable two points.
Well played today by Armadale, with their backs to the wall in the second half they defended well and could have nicked some more goals on the break.
Clearly a hugely disappointing result for the Diamonds but much can be taken from the performance. With similar endeavour points can be picked up in the remaining league fixtures.
Tuesday 8th April League
Diamonds 0 Livingston Star 6
With the season disrupted by bad weather midweek fixtures were required to clear the backlog. Tuesday evening saw the first of those.
Having already beaten Livi Star this season the Diamonds knew they were capable of beating the league leaders. A good start was required, unfortunately after 12 minutes the Diamonds found themselves three goals down.
To their credit the Diamonds did not cave in, battled hard and matched their opponents for the remainder of the half with both sides creating chances and coming close to scoring. The home side produced the best move of the half. Good interplay between Kenny, Adam and Sam worked the ball wide, Craig shooting wide. Craig then came closer when a 35 yards drive crashed onto the Livi Star crossbar.
The visitors were still dangerous spreading the ball well they created chances, Craig making a couple of good saves.
The second half started with a good Diamonds move, Callum running onto a through ball but in stretching to reach it he fired his shot just over.
Any hopes of a Diamonds comeback were dashed in the half’s fourth minute. A corner was swung in and headed home past a rather static Diamonds defence. Still battling hard the Diamonds tried to push forward and left themselves exposed at the back.
The games fifth goal came when one of the nippy Livi Star forwards ran through on goal. Making a good run on the Referee’s blind side and thus avoiding the expected offside call !
With a sixth late goal Livi Star wrapped the game up. There was time however for the visitors to produce the second half's best move. Working the ball down the right their big midfield player changed the direction of play with a super crossfield pass, setting up a chance that was fired just wide of the far post.
Well played this evening by Livi Star who showed why they are currently top of the Division. Sore for that Diamonds but encouraging to see the fighting spirit which will be required in the forthcoming games.
Sunday 16th March League
Whitburn Amber 6 Diamonds 1
Despite defending into a strong wind the Diamonds started well, forcing the early pace in the game and creating the first chance. A shot from Adam being gathered by the keeper.
Using the wind Whitburn started to attack and opened the scoring in the 8th minute. Some good passing and a precise pass put the home striker through on goal, Craig came off his line and blocked his shot. The ball rebounded outside the penalty box, not cleared and the follow up shot was driven low into the net.
Diamonds still playing well pushed Whitburn back, Scott had a shot saved. Laurence then played the games, and possibly the season’s best pass. He won the ball at the back, took it forward a few paces, looking up he saw Liam’s goalward run, he chipped the ball over the Whitburn defence, perfectly weighted into Liam’s path who cut in on goal. He drove a low shot past the keeper who stretched out an arm, pulling the ball back into his body. Was the ball over the line .....the Referee said no !
Whitburn then had a good period of pressure, scoring twice in five minutes.
19 minutes. A cross ball was headed home at the far post
24 minutes. Not sure what happened here, Whitburn had a throw in on the far side. Your match reporter turned his head thinking “ no danger here ”, he heard a roar seconds later, turned round to see the ball nestling in the Diamonds net !
In a strong end to the game the visitors got back into the game. Sam scrapped and battled in the Whitburn half winning a free kick. Andrew’s low cross seemed to deceive the defence and the ball found its way to Adam’s outstretched foot and into the net.
Another free kick was swept into the Whitburn box, in front of goal the ball just wouldn’t fall to a Diamonds forward, it was scrambled clear but returned into the danger area, another goalmouth scramble ensued before the ball was once again cleared.
The half time whistle sounded with a scoreline of Whitburn Amber 3 Uphall Diamonds 1, but not a too bad position for the Diamonds to be in. Shooting with the wind and playing well they had every chance of getting back into the game.
That idea was dashed in only 18 seconds. Whitburn kicked off ..... and scored.
With heads down it was frankly game over already.
In a very disappointing second half the home team scored a further two goals and were denied another by an acrobatic goal line clearance from Andrew.
The Diamonds shooting with the wind managed one shot at goal, that coming with five minutes to go.
A frustrating day for the Diamonds and their supporters, a game which was without doubt winnable was allowed to slip away.
Time to regroup and rediscover the Diamonds team that refused the give up against Broxburn in the County Cup, four times a goal behind, four time fighting back, going on to win. The Diamonds team that dumped Livi Star out of the Regional Cup. The Diamonds team that had already beaten Whitburn in the league.
With determination and hard work there are lots of points which can, and will be won in the final stage of the season.
Sunday 2nd March League
Diamonds 2 Broxburn Colts 6
Uphall Diamonds and Broxburn Colts met for the fifth time this season on a very heavy and wet Academy pitch. With the weeks constant rain the game had looked unlikely to go ahead and was indeed the only 16s fixture of the day.
After a cagey opening 10 minutes Broxburn took the lead with a very simple goal. They won a throw in level with the Diamonds penalty box, the Broxburn player was given time to play the ball into the Diamonds penalty box where it was met by the unmarked forward who hit a shot goalwards, Craig couldn’t hold it and the visitors were ahead. Frankly a terrible goal to lose !
The Diamonds put that behind them and equalized in the 19th minute. With Broxburn in possession Sam won a crunching tackle, he played the ball back to Andrew who returned it into the visitors half. A Broxburn player tried to find his keeper but was wayward with his pass back. Liam nipped in, rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the corner of the net.
Both teams then had chances to score.
Kenny had a low shot saved by the Broxburn keeper. Liam saw a snap shot slip just wide of the post.
Broxburn then broke upfield and were foiled by a great save from Craig, winning a one on one battle with the forward. They came close again when a deep cross was fired into the Diamonds goalmouth, the pressure was alleviated by Andrew with a very cool under pressure header back to the keeper.
There were clearly more goals in this game and so it proved. On the half hour Broxburn took the lead with a very good goal. Some good play down the right, a pass inside and a terrific strike from 25 yards into the top left corner of the net.
The Diamonds were not for giving up however and from the restart Andrew made a powerful run into the visitors half, a good pass released Kenny whose shot was blocked by his marker.
With five minutes remaining in the half the Diamonds were level again. A corner was cleared and returned back into the box, it was bundled wide to Craig T who drove the ball hard into the six yard box. In an attempt to clear a Broxburn defender turned the ball into his own net.
This prompted a powerful finish from the Diamonds. Craig had a shot saved low at the far post. Then in the final minute of the half another Diamonds corner was swept onto the Broxburn goal line and eventually scrambled away.
The home side started the second half where they left the first, pushing forward. A series of corners were won but all cleared by the Broxburn back line.
The tide then started to turn Broxburn’s way. Andrew was forced into a goal saving clearance. Craig in goals then just got his toe to a low shot, turning the ball wide. Scott in turn making a superb last gasp block to protect the Diamonds net.
With an hour gone Broxburn scored the goal which had been on the cards, catching the Diamonds on the break their forward cut into the penalty box, he hit a drive onto the near post, it cannoned out, was returned into the six yard box and turned into the net.
Two minutes later the home side were in real trouble, a slack goal kick was picked up by Broxburn, their forward latched onto the ball, drove goalwards and powered a low shot into the net.
The Diamonds pushed forward in an attempt to get a foothold back into the game. A powerful run from Craig T released Kenny who hit a shot wide, Laurence had a shot well saved but it was Broxburn who found the net. Quick on the break they ran through the Diamonds defence to score, then in the final minute found the net again.
Disappointment for Uphall. For an hour there was little between the sides and had they grabbed the game’s crucial fifth goal who knows what would have happened.
Well played by Broxburn today, they mastered the conditions well, played some good football and deserved their win.
Sunday 17th February League
Armadale 1 Diamonds 1
An important game today with both teams desperate to win the two points which could be so important in the race for A Division survival.
The Diamonds got off to the best possible start. From the kick off they pushed forward and won a free kick at the edge of the penalty box when Liam was blocked. Craig stepped up to take the kick and slammed the ball into the top corner of the net. A great strike giving the keeper no chance.
Boosted the Diamonds regained the ball from the restart and drove forward, Sam driving a shot just wide from the edge of the box.
With 13 minutes gone Armadale created their first chance, Craig making a good save pushing a low shot round the post. The resultant corner well cleared.
The pressure however was mainly towards the home goal.
A good passing move gave Adam a look at goal, his shot saved by the keeper. Kenny lofted a shot just over the bar. Then Liam broke strongly down the left, he cut into the box and was halted by a tackle from an Armadale defender, the ball deflected wide for a corner .... which was strangely given as a goal kick by the Referee !
The Diamonds continued to press. A throw in from Sam was flicked onto Adam who hit a low shot, gathered by the keeper. Liam then made another run down the left, he lashed the ball across the face of goal. Tam got his head to the ball but was unable to direct it on target.
As the half drew to a close Armadale started to fight back.
